Government purchases 47 million tonnes of carbon abatement

AusBN – Environment Minister Greg Hunt has announced that the government purchased 47 million tonnes of carbon abatement for A$660 million.

The acquisition used over a quarter of the governments $2.55 billion Emissions Reduction Fund, which is designed to reduce Australia’s emissions.

Over 100 contracts have been awarded through the auction however not much detail has been revealed about each individual project involved.

Hunt said: "This is a stunning result for Australia, a stunning result for the Government - but most importantly it's a stunning result for the environment."

The Emissions Reduction Fund is part of the government Direct Action plan, which provides financial incentives for polluters to reduce emissions.


Enel Green Power installs 231MW solar projects

ABN – Construction has started on Enel Green Power’s (BIT, BMAD: EGPW) 231 megawatt solar power plants in South Africa.

The three photovoltaic power plants are part of South Africa’s third phase Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme.

Around 82 megawatts will be installed at the Paleisheuwel plant in Western Cape Province and a further 82 megawatts at the Aurora project in Northern Cape Province.

The final 66 megawatts will be constructed at the Tome Burke plant in Limpopo Province.

A further 82.5 megawatts in South Africa has recently been awarded to the company.
