Optus wins rights to English Premier League

Barclays Premier LeagueAusBN – Optus has won the exclusive rights to broadcast the English Premier League in Australia, taking them from long-term holder Fox Sports.

The telecommunications giant will now broadcast 380 matches each season for the next three years.

Industry analysts suggest that Optus could have paid as much as $50 million to broadcast the most-watched sports league in the world.

Fox Sports, who has broadcast the league since the late 90s, said it put in a “strong and realistic” bid to retain the rights and was disappointed to lose them.

It is rumoured that Qatar-owned broadcaster BeIN Sports also put in a bid.

An Optus spokesperson said the company wanted to make the content available to as many fans as possible, and was currently exploring options for distribution.
