AusBN - The state of Victoria has launched a AUS$146 million Renewable Energy Action Plan, backed by former US Vice-President and environmentalist Al Gore.
Gore joined Victoria’s Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Lily D’Ambrosio at the launch of the clean energy plan, after riding on one Melbourne’s trams which will all soon be powered by solar energy.
The plan will fund the purchasing of renewable energy certificates, grid-scale battery storage facilities, smart software systems.
An ambitious clean energy generation target of 25% by 2020 and 40% by 2025 will also come in under the plan.
“This funding represents the most significant government investment in renewable energy in Victoria’s history,” said D’Ambrosio
“We need to ensure that the new energy technology sector is equipped to create jobs, attract investment and grow the economy for the benefit of all Victorians – and we’re doing just that.
Australia has not formulated a post-2020 national renewable energy target, which could incite state governments to pursue individual goals, much like Victoria’s Renewable Energy Action Plan.
